Texas Longhorns on SI
As a writer for Sports Illustrated’s Longhorns on SI, I provided daily coverage of Texas Athletics, primarily focusing on baseball and football.
My work often included game recaps, sidebars, breaking news and TV and radio information stories, giving me experience writing across a variety of formats and on tight deadlines. I also gained hands-on experience working within a CMS and incorporating SEO best practices to make stories more accessible to a digital audience.
Covering Texas baseball gave me the wonderful and enriching opportunity to follow a team closely throughout a season! I had the privilege of attending games every weekend, becoming familiar with the players and coaches and developing story ideas from press conferences, interviews and live events. The entire experience greatly strengthened my ability to develop quality content quickly and provide accurate, engaging coverage in a fast-paced sports environment.
The Daily Texan
As a general sports reporter for The Daily Texan, I covered Texas rowing, women’s swim and dive, and men’s golf. I regularly interviewed athletes and coaches, worked with sports information directors and collaborated with a beat partner to develop story ideas and produce timely, engaging coverage.
During my time at the Texan, I strengthened my reporting, interviewing and deadline writing skills while learning to build relationships with sources and find compelling stories. Covering several different sports also challenged me to quickly become familiar with new teams, athletes and storylines and translate that knowledge into coverage that was both informative and accessible to readers.
